I’m looking for authors to consider being part of a bundle called Fantastic Feline Heroes.
What’s a Bundle?
A bundle is a collection of stories like an anthology but these are not purchased by the editor. Instead, sites like Bundle Rabbit (or Story Bundle or Humble Bundle) allow authors to upload their stories to be bundled with other authors. The site takes care of the split of money when the collection is purchased. The person creating the bundle is not the editor, but the curator.
Chuck, the wonderful man who created Bundle Rabbit saw how well more famous authors did in places like Story Bundle and Humble Bundle. Unfortunately, not all of us know people who are willing to create bundles so he thought it would be great if there were a market place where people could put up stories and curators could draw from those stories. Or you could contact other writers and curate those stories.
At any rate, Bundle Rabbit is at www.BundleRabbit.com (easy) and you can read the FAQs and look at other bundles that he has published there. It’s free to join and upload your stories. Chuck takes a percentage out of each bundle sale. This is how he is paid for the time and money spent allowing us to use the platform he has created. Chuck is AWESOME by the way.
With Bundle Rabbit you can just have the bundle available through that site or you can also put the bundle up on major ebook retailers as a collection, like Amazon, Kobo, and iBooks (among others). I am planning to have this available exclusive to Bundle Rabbit for an initial period of time and then it will go wide.
So what about THIS bundle?
This is what I’m looking for for Fantastic Feline Heroes
- Something fantastic. Certainly urban fantasy and contemporary fantasy is fine, wherein the cat is the fantastic element, not quite being a cat cat (think Joe Gray)
- The cat must the hero. By the cat’s own thoughts and actions the cat must save the world, or at least the world for the person the cat cares most about. The cat cannot just be the vehicle that allows the humans to solve the problem in the end (ala the DC Randall mysteries, which most of you know as the Disney film, That Darn Cat)
- The cat cannot die in the end.
- The ending must be happy.
- Short stories and novellas are fine–shorts should not be flash fiction and I’d love it if novellas capped at 20,000 words.
I’m okay with any genre that can use those elements. Think contemporary fantasy, urban fantasy, otherworld fantasy, steampunk, and even science fiction if there is something sufficiently “fantastic” in that world.
Ghosts are fine. I know, right, the cat is dead? I’m fine so long as the reason the cat is dead is not the point of the story. In other words, if Fluffy died four hundred years ago and now is a ghost guarding the family manor, I’m cool with that. I am not cool if Mrs. Perkins is only alive because Fluffy gave her life to save her and I’m sobbing in my chair for hours afterwards.
Clockwork cats and robot cats are also fine, so long as they are sufficiently feline. In other words, pretty much all feline but there will probably be conventions for not-mammal cats. Remember feline heroes are what’s important.
What do I need to do?
Contact me (either the form on this site or you can use email kokomeezer AT gmail — you did know that gmail was a dot com right?) I know the contact form talks about book buyers but those come direct to me anyway. Just put down the subject as cat bundle or something like that. Or use the other email I put above.
Then you need to have a story or novella. You have to be able to format your story so that it can be uploaded to Bundle Rabbit. Chuck will reformat it for the in-house styles and there are several options for uploading. You will need to have a cover.
Previously published works are fine, so long as you have the rights to self-publish them. These stories cannot be part of Kindle Unlimited as Bundle Rabbit is a separate publishing platform and I will be having Bundle Rabbit publish the bundle on the major ebook retailers.
I’m looking for about 11 authors (with me, that makes a bundle of 12). If I haven’t read your work, I will want to read the story. If you have a huge number of credits of writing, I at least want to see your Amazon writing page. That’s right. I’m not editing stories. I’m curating. I’m not going to change things. If the story doesn’t work and the cover doesn’t look professional, I will not be choosing it for the Bundle.
And remember, you’ll want an About the Author Page in your work so if people find you via the bundle, they know where to read more of your writing (even if it’s on your blog).
Will I get Paid?
If the bundle sells, yes you will get paid.
Chuck takes a percentage, I will have a charity take a small percentage, I get a percentage as curator and then all the authors split the rest of the percentage. I admit, there are bundles where I get about $0.19/sale. But I keep selling these stories and introducing new readers to my work. The exact amount each other gets depends upon the price point and the number of authors. Typically bundles are sold between $3.99 and $5.99. (Figure 60% to 70% of that price divided by 12 and that will give you a ballpark. Amazon takes a small fee for collections when people purchase from there so it’s not exact when outside sales come through).
Yes, there will be a percentage that goes to a charity. Right now, I’m thinking Blind Cat Rescue would be a great charity for this bundle to donate to but once I get the authors together I am happy to take suggestions on other cat-centric charities. Chuck is great about working with curators to make sure our bundles are exactly the way we want them.
I want to have the bundle ready to go in January 2018. I’d love to have interest by the end of April, firm commitments by the end of August and all stories must be uploaded to Bundle Rabbit and ready to go by December 1.
Who the Heck are You?
I write fiction as Bonnie Elizabeth. My Big Fat Orange Cat publishes my work. You can find my stories on this site or you can search through your favorite retailers. I have a number of short stories up and my series is a contemporary fantasy series that takes place in a town called Whisper. The first book is Whisper Bound.
I also write acupuncture business books as Bonnie Koenig, LAc. Don’t all rush out and buy all of those titles at once. Acupuncture businesses need time to grow.
Many of the cat writers know me as the writer behind Chey at The Cat Post Intelligencer.
